Get to Know St. John's College

About St. John's:

St. John’s has one academic program: reading and discussing the great books of Western civilization. Alongside names such as Plato, Shakespeare, Euclid, Nietzsche, Einstein, and Austen, Johnnies wrestle with ideas in interdisciplinary classes with fewer than 20 students. The shared academic experience includes no required lectures, majors, or back rows—and is part of the reason St. John’s was named one of the 40 “Colleges That Change Lives”. Johnnies are original and unconventional, love big questions and discussion, and debate the thinkers, authors, scientists, philosophers, musicians, mathematicians, politicians, and more who changed our world.

Summer Academy:

St. John’s Summer Academy is a college summer program for high school students (ages 15 to 18), modeled after St. John’s discussion-based, interdisciplinary method of teaching the great books. A hands-on introduction to college life, our Great Books Summer Reading Program helps students hone their reading, critical thinking, and discussion skills. With engaging workshops and awesome off-campus excursions, the Summer Academy is a blast.

Virtual Visits and Virtual Tours:

Our Virtual Visits are small, interactive opportunities for our visitors and their families to meet with representatives of the college. You’ll have the chance to learn some introductory information about the Program and student life, and plenty of time for your questions. At the conclusion of your visit, we invite you to wander through our Virtual Tours to see more of our campus!
