Get to Know St. John's College Before You Apply
Get Ready for College
Applying to college is a stressful process, it can feel like you are deciding how the rest of your life will go before even having lived it. St. John's wants to make that process as simple as we can and give you all the tools for a successful application process, whether you are applying just to St. John's or to every college in the country. Here are some of the best things you can do to be absolutely ready when November (or January) rolls around.
During the summer, many colleges host events specifically designed for Juniors and other prospective students who are beginning the process of applying to college. These events are a great opportunity to get to know the college you are considering while answering some of your questions about applying to college more generally.
Upcoming Events for Prospective Students
KNOW YOUR COUNSELOR
Take the time to get to know the person who will be reading your application and allow them to get to know you. Especially at a small school like St. John's, admissions counselors are as interested in who you are and how you will contribute to the college community as they are in your grades. To find out who your counselor is, enter your information in our Find My Counselor Tool or do some old fashioned sleuthing on our staff page.
KNOW YOUR SCHOOL
Attend an open house or campus tour, whether virtual or in person, to meet you fellow applicants and to get a feeling for the community that you are considering joining. You will probably spend four years of your life at the school you choose to attend so make sure going in that you feel a connection with the campus and the people you meet there. Explore the website and explore the college on social media to learn more about what it values, then reach out to a current student to get their perspective.
GET STARTED ON YOUR ESSAY
The college essay is an incredibly important part of your college application. It is often the only chance you will have to show the admissions committee who you are and what you care about, so take your time. Write a draft or two, give it to a friend to read, and take advantage of the chance to meet one on one with a St. John's College Admissions Counselor to go over a draft of your essay (either a common essay that you will use for many schools or the St. John's essay) and get tips on college essay writing.
