Leibniz begins this essay by reporting an "ancient saying" that "God created everything according to weight, measure, and number" and he goes on to say that number is a "fundamental metaphysical form." Such talk has a particularly currency in the contemporary moment, as one often hears about the possibility that all human doings — including human thinking — will themselves be captured by, if not weight and measure, then certainly by number. This essay, then, will allow us to see what may well be the origin of claim — fantasy? — that all of human life can be quantified, mathematized. Can this truly be achieved? And, if so, what does it mean about human thinking that it is, ultimately, an operation of number?
